About the Surgery

Uterine fibroids are tumors that originate in the uterus (womb). Although they are composed of the same smooth muscle fibers as the uterine wall (myometrium), they are much denser than normal myometrium. Uterine fibroids are usually round. In most cases, fibroids do not cause pain. These fibroids never develop in to Uterine cancer.

Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)– A thin tube is threaded into the blood vessels that supply blood to the fibroid. Then, tiny gel particles are injected into the blood vessels. This blocks the blood supply to the fibroid, causing it to shrink. Not all fibroids can be treated with UFE. The best candidates for UFE are women who:
  • Have fibroids that are causing heavy bleeding
  • Have fibroids that are causing pain or pressing on the bladder or rectum
  • Don't want to have a hysterectomy
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding, can result in anemia or painful periods which is lasting more than a week.?-Feeling of fullness in the pelvic area (lower stomach area)
  • Enlargement of the lower abdomen
  • Frequent urination
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Lower back pain
  • Complications during pregnancy and labour, including a six-time greater risk of caesarean section
  • Difficulty emptying the bladder
  • Constipation
  • Backache or leg pains

  • Few type of medications are to be stopped at the advice of the surgeon , aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), or blood thinners several days prior to your procedure.
  • Not to eat or drink anything after midnight before your procedure.

Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) – A thin tube is thread into the blood vessels that supply blood to the fibroid. Then, tiny plastic or gel particles are injected into the blood vessels. This blocks the blood supply to the fibroid, causing it to shrink. UFE can be an outpatient or inpatient procedure.

  • About 7 to 10 days to fully recover.
  • It may take 2 to 3 months for the fibroid to shrink enough for symptoms to decrease and your menstrual cycle return to normal.
  • Prescriptions for pain relief and other oral medications will be given by the Doctor.
  • A Balanced diet – include fibre rich foods and green leafy vegetables, Iron rich foods with adequate amount of physical activity is recommended.
  • Early menopause, are uncommon but can occur.
  • There is always a chance that an embolic agent can lodge in the wrong place and deprive normal tissue of its oxygen supply.
  • An occasional allergic reaction to the x-ray contrast material used.
  • The likelihood of requiring hysterectomy after UFE, on a later stage.
  • Future childbearing would be a concern, UFE can affect fertility
  • A Cesarean procedure during delivery time to avoid harming the uterine walls.
