Cholecystectomy can relieve the pain and discomfort caused due to gallstones. Conservative treatments, such as dietary modifications may not stop gallstones from recurring.
In most cases, a cholecystectomy will prevent gallstones from coming back.
A surgical procedure of removing your gallbladder is termed Cholecystectomy. The gallbladder is a pear-shaped organ that is based just below your liver. The gallbladder collects and stores bile, a digestive fluid produced in your liver.
Cholecystectomy can relieve the pain and discomfort caused due to gallstones. Conservative treatments, such as dietary modifications may not stop gallstones from recurring.
Cholecystectomy is a common surgery and you can go home the same day, post-surgery. The laparoscopic procedure carries minimal complications.

Cholecystectomy is usually performed under general anesthesia, and therefore the patient will have no realization of the procedure being performed.
Once the anesthesia takes over, the surgeon performs the cholecystectomy either in a laparoscopic or an open procedure.
Cholecystectomy is a common surgery and you can go home the same day, post-surgery. The laparoscopic procedure carries minimal complications. Depending on the individual situation, a surgeon will recommend either of the two surgical approaches:
Minimally Invasive (laparoscopic) Cholecystectomy
In a Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, the surgeon makes four small incisions in your abdomen.
A tiny video camera is inserted through a tube into your abdomen, from one of the incisions. The camera is connected to a video monitor, and the entire surgery is performed while seeing the visuals on this monitor.
Through the other incisions, surgical tools are inserted in your abdomen and used to remove the gallbladder. Post removal of the gallbladder, the surgeon might put the patient through imaging tests like X-ray or Ultrasound. This is done if the surgeon suspects the possibility of other problems in the bile duct.
The incisions are sutured after the procedure and the patient is shifted to the recovery room. The entire Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy might take one to two hours.
A Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy might not be ideal for every patient. There are cases where the surgery begins in a Laparoscopic procedure but depending on the complication, a traditional open surgery needs to be performed.
Traditional (open) Cholecystectomy
In open cholecystectomy, the surgeon makes a 6-inch incision in the patient's abdomen below your ribs, on the right side. Here, the muscle and tissue are pulled back to reveal the liver and gallbladder.
At this stage, the surgeon then removes the gallbladder, the incision is then sutured, and the patient is taken to a recovery area. An open cholecystectomy also takes one or two hours to perform.
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy
Patients will be able to go home the same day post-surgery. In some cases, the patients might have to stay back in the hospital overnight, under observation.
The patient can resume eating a normal diet post-surgery and be sent home once they can walk unaided. Once at home, the patient might require a week or two for a full recovery.
Open cholecystectomy
A patient might have to spend two or three days in the hospital recovering under observation. Once the patient returns home, it may take a further four to six weeks to fully recover.
A patient might not experience digestive problems after cholecystectomy as a gallbladder isn't essential for healthy digestion. Some people may experience loose stools occasionally post the procedure, and it generally resolves over time.
If you experience any change in bowel habits or new symptoms post the procedure bring it to the notice of your doctor.
Your recovery time and resuming a normal routine lifestyle all depend on the type of procedure performed and your health and condition.
Laparoscopic procedures are quick healing and therefore lesser time is required to get back to work and routine. Whereas, open Cholecystectomy procedure takes a longer time to recover.
Post-surgery the patient is shifted to the recovery room, and as the anesthesia wears off, the patient is shifted to the hospital room for a full recovery.
However, the patient's recovery depends on the procedure performed-
Cholecystectomy procedures can lead to small risk or complications like:
Bile leak
Infection
Bleeding
Injury to nearby structures, such as the bile duct, liver, and small intestine during the procedure.
Risks associated with general anesthesia, like blood clots and pneumonia.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy decreases postoperative pain as well as decreases the need for postoperative analgesia. The hospital stay is short, ranging from 24 hours to a couple of days. The patient can resume full activity within a week.
Postoperative the patient is observed for a couple of hours before discharge. In case further monitoring is required, the stay is extended for a day.
Patients should expect some degree of postoperative discomfort around the port sites but should also be sensitive for any signs or symptoms.
Most people might experience mild to moderate pain, which is controlled with oral painkillers. However, patients may experience some pain from the wounds, especially on movement.
You can return to normal physical activities as and when you feel comfortable. It is usually a week's recovery time you need to come back to your normal activities. Avoid weight lifting and vigorous exercise at least for two weeks post-surgery.
You can ideally resume a normal diet, eating light and progressing towards your regular appetite. However, it may take three or four days to have a normal bowel movement.
You may have to undergo the tests as prescribed by the doctor to evaluate the type, size, and location of the gallstone for surgery. Patients with other ailments like allergies, liver and blood disorders are approached in a slightly different manner as compared to those without them. Hence, one must visit the doctor for the best treatment option.
An alternative is laparoscopic cholecystectomy or gallbladder removal, a minimally intrusive option as compared to open surgery (cholecystectomy) associated with faster recovery and less postoperative complication. But this is decided by the treating doctor.
Small gallstones do pass through the faeces. However, the larger ones get stuck and may lead to pain, infection and obstruct the bile ducts. Hence, one must visit a doctor for treatment to avoid further complications.
If the gallstones cause the patient severe pain and are left untreated for a long time it may cause a condition called acute cholecystitis which is dangerous and needs immediate treatment.
It is seen as an infection that may spread to the surrounding tissues (leading to sepsis) due to gallstone obstruction in the gallbladder. Hence, it is better to seek treatment on experiencing any symptoms from a suitable doctor.
To avoid complications and prevent the recurrence of gallstones you must maintain a healthy diet, drink lots of water each day, lose weight if obese, and get treated for any underlying diseases like heart problems, liver cirrhosis, etc that can cause gallstones in the future.
Some studies do suggest this, as it may cause an increase in cholesterol level and worsen other conditions like heart problems, diabetes, and intestinal issues that can later cause gallstones to develop.
Preferably a surgical gastroenterologist must be consulted.
Jaundice, Pancreatitis, acute cholecystitis, infection leading to sepsis, cancer and acute cholangitis.
Your doctor will be the right person to tell you if you’re suitable for gallbladder removal through some tests done to evaluate type, size and location of the gallstone. The approach is different for those with allergies, liver ailments and blood disorders.
It may happen when the stones are small enough to reach the intestine through bile duct and get finally out with stool. However, they may get stuck in gallbladder or bile ducts and cause pain, infections and obstructions, leading to the need for medical help.
The gallbladder does not perform any important functions. So, its removal will cause no issues to the body, and you will still be able to live a normal, healthy life.
Laparoscopic gallbladder removal is one of the safest general surgeries.
No, if the gallbladder is left intact, it will result into the recurrence of stones within 3-6 months. The gallbladder with gallstones is a diseased one and needs to be removed.
