Hip Impingement - Procedure Details

Surgery for hip impingement is mainly done through arthroscopy. Here’s the complete procedure breakdown:

• Anesthesia: General anesthesia will be administered in order to keep the patient unconscious and ensure a pain-free procedure. 
• Incisions: The surgeon makes a few small incisions called portals around the hip. These are used to insert the arthroscope and other surgical instruments.
• Diagnostic arthroscopy: Here an arthroscope, a thin flexible tube with an attached light source and camera is inserted through one of the incisions to examine the joint to assess the extent of impingement, cartilage damage, labral tears, and other abnormalities.
• Labral repair: If a labral tear (tear of the cartilage that surrounds the hip socket) is present, the surgeon will repair it using sutures or anchors.
• Cam and pincer resection: Using specialized instruments, the surgeon may reshape the femoral head (cam resection) and/or the acetabulum (pincer resection) to address the impingement.
• Closure: Sutures or staples are used to close the incisions, followed by the application of a sterile dressing.
