About the Surgery

1. Overview: Here doctors insert a tiny tube into the femoral artery of the thigh, by making a small incision in the appropriate location on the body.

This tube is directed to the prostate artery, surrounding the gland. On the positioning, a fluid containing tiny particles is injected into the artery. These tiny particles block the blood supply to the prostate, thereby shrinking the gland.

2. Snapshots:

  • Procedure Type: Minimally invasive
  • Anesthesia:
  • Hospitalization: days
  • Procedure time: About 2 hours
  • Recovery Time: 7-10 days

3. Post-Surgical Care

4. Advantages of this Procedure: Safe and effective, low risk of urinary incontinence and sexual side effects, minimal blood loss, infrequent overnight hospitalization.

Prostatic artery embolization (PAE) is a minimally invasive treatment that helps to lower your urinary tract symptoms caused by Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).

Prostatectomy involves the removal of a part or all of the prostate. When compared to other surgical procedures to treat this condition, PAE is less risky, minimally invasive, and has a shorter recovery period.

Transurethral resection of the prostate is a procedure that inserts an instrument in the penis and removes the prostate tissue.

Do you want to know the treatment option? Please contact our doctor at Medfin.

An alternative to surgery, for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) or enlarged prostate, is Prostatic Artery Embolization (PAE).

It is a minimally invasive technique compared to surgical procedures such as Prostatectomy and Transurethral Resection of the prostate.

Prostatectomy involves the removal of a part or all of the prostate. Transurethral resection of the prostate is a procedure that inserts an instrument in the penis and removes the prostate tissue.

Compared to traditional methods, the PAE procedure helps in shrinking the prostate gland without surgery.

In comparison to the above-described procedures, PAE has many advantages as enlisted below

  • Treatment is done through a pinhole in the wrist or groin and considerably less painful.
  • Hospitalization is not required.
  • Short recovery period.
  • Low risk of urinary incontinence (leakage of urine post-procedure).
  • There isn't a requirement to have the indwelling Foley Catheter inserted into the bladder to ensure the drainage of urine.
  • Less risk and side effects with your sexual activities like Erectile Dysfunction (ED) and Retrograde Ejaculation (entry of semen into the bladder instead of it being directed through the penis).

Prostatic artery embolization (PAE) is a minimally invasive treatment that helps improve lower urinary tract symptoms caused by Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).

  • Urinary incontinence, which can range from some leaking to complete loss of bladder control?-Irritative voiding symptoms
  • Increased urinary frequency,
  • Urgency, and pain upon urination
  • Sleep disorders
  • Stress and irritation
  • Fatigue and weakness.
  • UTI
  • Bladder stones and blood in the urine

It is an outpatient procedure, which allows the patient to be discharged the same day. PAE is performed under, conscious sedation and local anesthesia. This helps the patient to not feel the slight discomfort of the procedure. The patient is awake throughout the procedure.

It then proceeds as described in the stages below-
  • A small incision is made in the wrist or groin.? A thin tube is inserted into the relevant artery.
  • Real-time imaging guides the tube in the artery that leads to the prostate gland.
  • Synthetic particles, tinier than sand grains are then injected through this tube within the artery.
  • These particles then reduce the blood supply to the prostate, thus shrinking it and relieving the patient of his symptoms.
  • Post-procedure care is then recommended by the doctor.

PAE treatment is known to potentially have the least side effects.

  • Although, there may be temporary side effects post the procedure. These comprise painful or recurrent urination and pain in the pelvis.
  • Other risks could be an injury to the bladder or other organs located within the pelvic region. Therefore, the intervention of a specialist in the procedure is necessary.
  • The doctor is expected to discuss the same at length should the procedure be considered for a BPH patient.

Prostatic artery embolization is a procedure where the surgeon selectively blocks the arteries that supply blood to the enlarged prostate. As a result, the prostate starts to shrink over time relieving of symptoms.

It is a surgical procedure where the surgeon selectively embolisms artery to treat conditions like Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (Enlarged Prostate), Varicocele and liver cancer among others.

PAE is the right treatment for you if you are suffering from the symptoms common to an enlarged prostate. Also, if your prostate size is not fit for traditional surgery or you are not able to benefit from medication, PAE is the right treatment. The results of your tests would determine the extent of your prostate growth and the Interventional Radiologist can recommend if you can benefit from PAE.

An interventional radiologist performs PAE. Interventional Radiologist (IR) is a doctor and he/she uses x-rays along with other advanced imaging procedure to see inside the body. and then treat the conditions without surgery.

The pre-embolization examination for the presence of a malignant neoplasm (cancer) makes PAE a wrong procedure for patients. So, despite prostate enlargement, the symptoms must qualify for a PAE surgery.

Post PAE procedure, you should not experience any such changes in your sexual activity. However, as studies say, it is the pre-procedure medication that causes the side effects in sexual dysfunction.

Yes. There are various treatment options for Enlarged Prostate of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) to be cured.

An enlarged prostate is seen as a condition that is normal with ageing men. However, if not treated on time, there are chances of urine retention in the bladder that might lead to further difficulties like bladder damage, damage to the kidney, urinary tract infections or bladder stones.

An enlarged prostate can be treated by medication or surgery. Medication might take up to six months to heal prostate growth. Surgery is a faster process but again depends on the growth and dimensions of the prostate.

Enlarged prostate depends on case to case and hence your doctor is the right person to guide you with the treatment depending on your condition. BPH can be treated with surgery or medications.

For the PAE procedure, you will be required to be admitted a day before the treatment. You should not eat for at least six hours before the treatment and can only consume water.

Post PAE procedure, you should not experience any such changes in your sexual activity. However, as studies say, it is the pre-procedure medication that causes the side effects in sexual dysfunction. This will be answered by your treating doctor & Urologist.

Yes, there can be urinary tract infections, such as bladder stones, incontinence, blood in urine (Hematuria), urinary retention. Bladder or kidney damage can occur in rare cases.

Catheter is there in many patients to help in urination and to keep urethra open during the healing process during first few days after treatment.

BPH usually starts in men in their 30s, grows with time, and shows symptoms after 50 years of age.

Only around 15 to 20 per cent people show recurrence after TURP.
