A lipoma might dwell peacefully in your body and not cause any pain or discomfort. However, there is a case in which you need to approach your doctor considering the following observations-
Increase in the size of the lipoma.
Increase in the number of skin tumors you have.
If there is any personal history of skin cancer.
Any family history of skin cancer.
If the lipoma is turning painful.
Lipoma occurs on the surface of the body, the removal of the tumor does not mean an in-depth procedure and hence ensures a faster rate of healing.
Lipomas are tumors that are benign in nature which means they will not spread through the body and surrounding tissues and muscles.
Lipomas are not life-threatening. Lipoma as such does not need a treatment surgery, however, if the lipoma is growing or proving discomfort, then the doctor might recommend you to get it removed.

• Excision (Surgical removal)
Most Lipomas are recommended to be removed with the surgical method that is also known as minimal excision or excision.
The Lipomas are cut out surgically after the area around the lipoma is treated to general or regional anesthesia depending on the depth and size of the Lipoma.
Excision is the only treatment that can remove the Lipoma fully. There are lesser chances of recurrence with this procedure.
• Liposuction
The Liposuction procedure uses a needle as well as a large syringe to remove the fatty lump. The liposuction procedure is marked by recurrences. The only advantage it brings is it is scarless. Liposuction is also done under general anesthesia and the patient can go home the same day.
• Steroid injections
The steroid injection treatment shrinks the lipoma but usually doesn't eliminate it. The use and potential of injections before surgical removal remains to be studied.
Pre Surgery Procedure
Your doctor will advise you certain things to be done before the surgery-
A patient is recommended not to eat or drink anything 6 hours before the surgery.
The patient should inform the doctor of any regular pre-medications taken that might affect the surgery especially if the patient is on blood-thinning medicines, the doctor needs to be informed.
Post-Surgery Recovery
In both Excision and Liposuction, the patient should be able to go home soon after the procedure is completed, if it is a small or superficial mass. The surgery leaves behind a few stitches, which the doctor will remove in a couple of weeks' time.
The surgical site is sutured and dressed. The patient needs to restrict activities until the stitches have completely healed.
The risks associated with lipoma removal:
The patient might bleed exceedingly or might also develop an infection at the surgical wound.
At times, a pocket of blood or fluid might form under the skin which might heal on its own or require further treatment.
Post-surgery a patient should seek immediate care if –
There is bleeding through the surgical wound.
You experience fever or chills.
The wound is red, swollen, or is draining pus.
A feeling of nausea or vomiting.
The skin is itchy, swollen, or a rash appears.

As lipoma occurs on the surface of the body, the removal of the tumour does not mean in-depth procedure and hence ensures a faster rate of healing.
The results are distinctly seen post the surgery. The bulge caused by the Lipoma flattens as the tumour is removed. The patient might however experience some swelling and discomfort post the treatment.
Lipomas are treated with local or general anaesthesia and therefore the patient does not experience any pain during the surgery.
It all depends on how the patient is taking care post surgery. The patient should not physically exhaust or perform strenuous activities that could strain the stitches. This could then lead to pain, infection and uneven scarring. Ideally, a good rest with mild activities should be able to get you back to your work in two weeks.
This call the doctor would take, depending on the individual case. However, different sites would need different amounts of anaesthesia as compared to a single site, as well as the rate of recovery would also be delayed.
There are no potential risks involved in this surgery, just the temporary side effects like pain, bruises and swelling that might stay for a couple of days.
A lipoma is benign tumour and apart from being non-life-threatening, they also do not spread across the body. A good self-care and timely consultation with the doctor should ideally help.
Depending on your individual case of how deep set the lipoma is, the surgeon should be able to guide you with the ideal operation technique.
A lipoma appears as a small lump or swelling on the skin in any part of the body, is soft on touch, and maybe painful in certain cases.
No. They are a benign condition.
Lipomas do not require treatment unless they become:
Larger in size
More painful
Inflamed
Show fluid discharge or become infected.
Results are immediately visible as the bulge, that contained the tumour, flattens. There, however, may be some swelling and discomfort.
Your doctor will take this call, as different sites need different anaesthesia amounts and delay the recovery.
Generally, it’s not dangerous and is non-cancerous too. They are not a threat to life, but it is better to seek medical help if there’s pain and discomfort in the lumps.
Left untreated, lipoma can grow around the nerves and blood vessels. Fatty tissues then pressurize the blood vessels and cause unbearable pain and discomfort. In fact, large-sized lipomas are difficult to treat as without damaging surrounding muscles and tissues. It can then become cancerous too.
There’s no prevention method known to prevent lipomas.
Lipoma may or may not spread across the body. The condition is a medical mystery where the growth in size and count cannot be determined.
