Types of Myringotomy Description Bilateral Myringotomy The bilateral myringotomy procedure includes making small cuts in both eardrums. Provides drainage and ventilation of the middle ear. This procedure is often done when both ears are affected. Unilateral myringotomy This procedure involves making an incision in just the eardrum of one ear. It can address issues in a single ear, such as chronic otitis media or recurrent infections. Tympanostomy tube insertion After making the incision, a small tube, called a tympanostomy tube, is inserted through the incision. This tube allows air to get in and drain out of the middle ear. Silicon or plastic tubes can be used. Endoscopic myringotomy This procedure uses an endoscope to visualize the middle ear and perform the myringotomy under direct visualization. It provides enhanced precision and visualization. Laser-assisted myringotomy In this procedure, surgeons will use a laser instead of a scalpel to make the incision in the eardrum. Could mean less bleeding and a more improved precision.
