When To Get Mommy Makeover Surgery?

Deciding to get a mommy makeover surgery should be done after considering the following factors to ensure safety and optimal outcomes:

  • Postpartum recovery: You should wait for at least 6 months after delivery to allow the body to recover from childbirth.
  • Breastfeeding: If you are breastfeeding, you will need to wait until you have finished breastfeeding and your breasts have returned to their pre-pregnancy size. This can take a few months after weaning.
  • Stable weight: Make sure that you are at a stable weight before the surgery. Weight fluctuations post-surgery can alter the outcomes of the surgery.
  • Future pregnancies: The procedure works only if you have no plans for a future pregnancy. Subsequent pregnancies can compromise the results of the surgery.
  • Overall health status: You should be in good health, free from any chronic illnesses, to avoid the possibility of complications during surgery and recovery. You will undergo a thorough medical evaluation to confirm your eligibility for the procedure.
  • Readiness: You should also be emotionally prepared to undergo the surgery that brings changes in your body image. You should be mentally healthy and stable.
  • Recovery period: Lastly, one needs to have enough time and support to recover from the surgery. You should arrange for someone to help you with childcare and daily activities during your recovery.

It is important to discuss your queries with a plastic surgeon as s/he can advise you on the need for a mommy makeover based on your health, lifestyle, and aesthetic goals.

How To Prepare For The Surgery?

Here’s an overview of how you can prepare yourself well in advance:

  • Consultation: You will have a consultation with the surgeon to discuss the procedure, potential risks, benefits, and alternatives.
  • Medical evaluation: The doctor will evaluate your medical history, carry out a physical examination, and go for additional tests if necessary. This helps assess your eligibility for the procedure.
  • Medication review: Inform the doctor about your current medications and supplements if any. You might need to adjust the dosage or temporarily stop certain medications such as blood thinners.
  • Smoking and alcohol use: You will be advised to stop smoking and use of alcohol for a brief period before and after the procedure as it can interfere with healing.
  • Fasting: You will be asked to avoid food and drinks from midnight the day before the procedure. Follow any dietary instructions provided by the doctor.
  • Arrange help: Make sure that you arrange for someone to drop you home from the hospital and also, arrange for help during your recovery.
  • Clothing and Mental Preparation: Keep loose and comfortable clothing prepared for surgery and recovery periods. Be mentally and emotionally prepared by understanding the various stages of recovery.

Follow all specific instructions given by your surgeon, as there may be a variation in individual requirements from person to person.

What You Can Expect During a Mommy Makeover Procedure?

The procedure for a mummy makeover depends on the combination of surgeries chosen to be performed on a patient. However, below is the general outline of a typical mommy makeover:

  • Anesthesia: You are administered general anesthesia to ensure that you are unconscious and pain-free during the procedure.
  • The surgical procedure: Given below is the order in which the various procedures are typically carried out:
  • Breast surgery: It can be breast augmentation, lift, or reduction.
  • Augmentation: Incisions are made and the breast tissue is lifted to create a pocket to insert implants. The implants are inserted using saline or silicone gel and can be inserted either under the pectoral muscle or under the breast tissue and above the pectoral muscle.
  • Lift: The surgeon makes incisions as necessary. Excess skin is removed to reshape and reposition the breasts. The areola and nipples are re-positioned before skin tightening.
  • Reduction: Incisions are made for the removal of fat, excess skin, and glandular tissue. The nipple is also repositioned and the areola is reduced by removing the skin. Finally, the breasts are reduced, lifted, and shaped.
  • Tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty): Here, a horizontal incision is made between one’s pubic hairline and the belly button. This is followed by the removal of excess skin and fat, after which the weakened abdominal muscles are also repaired.
  • Liposuction: Liposuction involves making several small incisions in the target areas for the removal of fat. Here, a cannula is inserted through the incisions to loosen excess fat and suction it out of the body.
  • Vaginoplasty: Excess vaginal lining and tissue are removed to reduce the diameter of the vaginal canal. This may involve trimming or excising redundant tissue.
  • Closure: Finally, the incisions are closed using sutures or other closure techniques, ensuring proper wound healing and minimizing scarr

Mommy Makeover Surgery - Recovery and Outlook

Recovery after a mummy makeover surgery is as follows:

  • At the hospital: After surgery, you will be shifted to a recovery room where you will be observed until the anesthesia wears off and you are stable.
  • Post-operative Care: After being discharged home, make sure that you follow the post-operative instructions provided by the surgeon, which may include wearing compression garments, and taking prescribed medications.
  • Rest and activity: You are supposed to take adequate rest in order to allow your body to heal. Also, make sure to avoid strenuous activities such as lifting heavy weights.
  • Follow-up visits: During your appointments, the sutures are removed, healing is assessed and any concerns are addressed. These visits are crucial to monitor progress and for a smooth recovery.
  • Long-term results: It takes several weeks to months for the swelling and bruising to diminish. Final results are visible only after several months to a year.
  • Maintenance: You can enjoy the results in the long run by maintaining an ideal weight and a healthy lifestyle.

The steps of the procedure and recovery process will vary from person to person based on the procedures performed, your overall health, and the techniques utilized.
