Overview

The VenaSeal closure system is the latest development in treating varicose veins. Varicose veins are twisted and bulging veins most commonly seen on your legs. VenaSeal varicose veins treatment uses an adhesive that seals the damaged vein and re-routes the blood flow to a healthy vein. Since this is an outpatient treatment, you can go on the same day. There is hardly any downtime. VenaSeal is a highly recommended treatment for varicose veins as well as a well-liked treatment option for those with varicose veins as a result of all these features.

What is VenaSeal?

Varicose veins are ugly-looking, bulging veins present on your legs. Varicose veins are formed when the veins are no longer capable of pushing the blood back toward your heart, a condition known as ‘venous reflux.’ Over time, the vein valves stop working completely. This leads to the pooling of blood in the affected veins, a condition known as ‘chronic venous insufficiency’. Varicose veins cause extreme pain and discomfort. VenaSeal is a method used to treat veins with venous reflux and chronic venous insufficiency.

This method gives fast and effective results in cases of varicose veins. This method uses a special medical-grade, United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) approved glue to seal the damaged veins. The glue holds the walls of the vein together. This initially stops the blood flow that is then re-routed to the nearby healthy veins. The body gradually adapts to this new route, absorbing the damaged veins into the body fluids. This minimally invasive procedure is comfortable for the patient and offers very little downtime. Post the procedure, there is minimal to no pain. There is no need to wear compression stockings too, which is a bonus for the patients.

When is VenaSeal Recommended?

VenaSeal is recommended for people who suffer from chronic varicose veins. If you have the symptoms of varicose veins, you will be an ideal candidate for this procedure. The symptoms of varicose veins include-

  • Swelling of the legs
  • Visible, knotty, rope-like veins of the leg
  • Pain
  • Itching
  • Discomfort

A vein specialist will go through your symptoms and conduct a physical evaluation to find out if you are the right candidate for the VenaSeal procedure.
VenaSeal procedure is not recommended to you if you suffer from a known allergy to the contents of the glue. Having an acute infection anywhere in your body or an inflammatory condition of the veins (phlebitis) are also contraindications for VenaSeal.

How To Prepare For A VenaSeal?

The VenaSeal procedure is a quick one that takes place in the doctor’s clinic itself. You do not need to be admitted to a hospital to get this procedure done. Here are the preparatory steps that are involved in the VenaSeal procedure-

  • Your doctor will conduct a thorough physical examination of the affected leg/legs.
  • You will be advised to get an ultrasound imaging test of the legs. This test helps the doctor understand the damage to the vein and the blood flow through it.
  • Discuss all your current health conditions and the medications you are taking for them, including herbs and supplements.
  • Mention any allergy to medications that you may have. This is crucial as sometimes people show allergic reactions to the contents of the glue used in this procedure.
  • Some doctors prefer performing this procedure under tumescent anesthesia. This is a technique of administering anesthesia where a diluted form of the anesthetic is injected into the tissue along the vein path. Tumescent anesthesia involves multiple needle pricks and is uncomfortable. Hence, most doctors prefer performing the VenaSeal procedure without anesthesia.
  • There are no dietary restrictions and fasting protocols to be followed.

How Is VenaSeal Performed?

VenaSeal is a quick procedure that is performed in the doctor’s clinic. Here is what happens to you during this procedure-

  • Once the anesthesia has taken effect, an access site for inserting the catheter is identified. This is usually on your lower leg, near the ankle.
  • With the guidance of an ultrasound, your doctor inserts a catheter into the diseased vein through the access site. You may feel a slight pinching sensation during this procedure.
  • A specially formulated, medical-grade glue is now placed inside the catheter.
  • Light external pressure is applied externally on the vein so that the glue adheres to the vein walls.
  • This procedure is repeated along the entire length of the vein.
  • Once the vein has been sealed completely, the catheter is gently removed.
  • A single adhesive bandage is now placed over the access site.
  • An ultrasound is used during the entire procedure to guide the catheter and to position it correctly.

What To Expect After A VenaSeal?

VenaSeal is a fast and effective procedure to treat varicose veins. Once the procedure is complete, you will be sent home immediately.

  • You can expect mild discomfort and pain due to the pushing of the catheter. Over-the-counter pain medicines and heat pads will help deal with the pain, though the pain never reaches that point in the majority of cases.
  • There is no bruising as VenaSeal does not use heat or lasers.
  • There is no swelling or inflammation. In some patients, there may be mild swelling, in which case elevating the legs will bring the swelling down quickly.
  • You will be advised to take care of the access site. You will have to keep it clean and dry at all times as it is a potential site for infection.
  • You may not be advised to wear compression stockings.
  • There is no need for rest and recuperation. Recovery from the procedure is immediate.
  • In rare cases, there may be an allergic reaction to the glue or you may develop a pulmonary embolism (a condition where one or more arteries in the lungs become blocked by a blood clot), phlebitis (inflammation of veins), or deep vein thrombosis (blood clot in the deep veins of the legs). Contact your doctor if you sense the following symptoms-
    • High-grade fever
    • Shortness of breath
    • Chest pain
    • Excessive swelling and pain in the leg

Unlike other surgeries and procedures where there is a recovery period, and you are asked to rest for a few days till the wounds heal, VenaSeal has no downtime at all. Rather, your doctor will encourage you to get up and start walking immediately after the surgery. You will be asked to indulge in activities like jogging, biking, playing tennis, etc as these activities promote the blood flow to and from the leg veins.
