1.Calcium Stones (Phosphate/Oxalate stones)

This type of kidney stones are most common types of kidney stones and are found in around 80% of the patients. Most of the calcium stones are usually calcium oxalate where as some of the them are calcium phosphate.

Calcium stones are formed when your diet has oxalate rich foods. You can reduce the risk of calcium stones by decreasing the oxalate rich food (potato chips, peanuts, beets, spinach and chocolate) in your diets.

2.Uric Acid Stones (Urate stones)

If you are not consuming enough fluids then you might be at risk to get uric acid stones. People who also have a high protein diet and have Gout are also in risk of uric acid stones. Men have a higher risk of developing Uric acid stones compared to women & Nearly 5% – 10% of the kidney stones are Uric Acid stones.

These type of stones form when the urine is too acidic. This happens when your diet is rich in purine or when you are not consuming enough fluid. You can reduce the risk of Uric Acid Stones by

  • Increasing the amount of fluid intake and their retention and

  • Reducing purine rich food (fish, shellfish and meats) in diet.

3.Struvite Stones

People with chronic urinary tract infections (UTIs) have a risk developing this type of kidney stones. As a result of infection, kidney stones may form and grow very fast. Struvite Stones are often large and have branches.

Nearly 10% of the kidney stones are Struvite/Infection stones. Women have a higher risk of Struvite stones than men. The best way to treat this type of kidney stone is to treat underlying infection.

4.Cystine Stones

Cystine kidney stones are very rare. It is common in both men and women. People with a hereditary disorder called Cystinuria develop cystine stones. This disorder causes the kidney to cystine into urine (hence the name), as a result cystine stones are developed.
