MRI is an acronym for magnetic resonance imaging. It is a diagnostic imaging technique that uses powerful radio waves and magnetic fields to create detailed images of the urinary system (comprising the kidney, ureter, and the bladder).
A KUB MRI may be helpful in the diagnosis of the underlying causes of abdominal pain (like perforations, masses, or obstruction). It also helps in gathering basic information about your urinary system such as the shape, size, and position of your ureters, and bladder. The doctor or radiographer may also notice the presence of calcifications in your ureters or kidneys.
When you arrive at the radiography unit, you will be asked to change into a lose gown. All jewelry and metals will be taken from your body. You will then lie in a supine position on the scan table. The technician will slide the table into the MRI unit using a remote device. In some cases, a contrast agent might be injected into your arm. The agent allows your organs to show up more clearly. It is important that you lie still during the imaging test. Any movement might cause image distortion. Results of the imaging test are sent to your doctor for analysis.
