What is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Gynecomastia is a condition developed in males because of enlarged or overdeveloped breasts. This can happen at any age.

The factors responsible for this condition are heredity, obesity, use of drugs to treat certain conditions, or hormonal changes.

Hormonal changes could be either increased estrogen (female hormone) or reduced testosterone (male hormone).

What are the conditions for Gynecomastia Surgery?

  • Excessive development of glandular tissue.

  • Unnecessary localization of fat.

  • In some cases, excessive breast skin.

  • It could prevail in a single or both breasts.

What is the surgical procedures of Gynecomastia?

The corrective surgery undertaken for the treatment of gynecomastia is also categorized under plastic surgery technically termed as reduction mammoplasty.

The surgery is performed under anesthesia. This could be achieved by intravenous sedation or general anesthesia.

  • Liposuction technique:

This technique is used when there is an unnecessary accumulation of fatty tissue leading to gynecomastia. It involves the insertion of a thin hollow tube (cannula), through multiple entry points in the breast.

The cannula is used to loosen the excessive fat by controlled back and forth movement. Once loosened, the fat is removed from the body by applying vacuum suction.

  • Excision technique:

When excessive glandular tissue or skin needs to be removed to correct gynecomastia, this technique is implemented. This technique is also required when the areola or nipple needs to be repositioned to a more masculine contour.

The best excision pattern is determined by the operating surgeon depending on the desired result.

A combination of liposuction and excision could also be used depending on the underlying cause of gynecomastia.

What is the Post surgery procedures of Gynecomastia?

Post-surgery, in the recovery period, the patient will have multiple visits to replace the bandage and for assessment of the recovery from surgery.

The surgeon may keep a small tube inserted temporarily to allow any excess fluid or blood to be drained from the operated site.

Additionally, the doctor gives directives post-surgery to care for the surgical wound until complete recovery.
