About the Surgery

The veins in the scrotum have one-way valves to prevent blood flowing back during the brief moment between heartbeats. When these valves fail to function properly, the blood pools in the veins causing it to swell. This condition is known as varicocele.
Varicocele is commonly formed during puberty on the left side of one’s scrotum, because of its anatomy.

The symptoms of varicocele are very hard to find and because of this half the time, the condition goes unnoticed by the individual. However, these are the few most common symptoms of varicoceles:

  • Swelling in the scrotum.
  • Enlarged veins which are easily noticeable.
  • A constant mild pain in the scrotum.
  • Infertility

Preparation for any surgery is a very important step. For varicocelectomy to be carried out, the individual must undertake certain steps before the surgery such that no complications arise during or even after the treatment.

  • Blood thinners or supplements or any other medications may be stopped a week before the surgery at the advice of the doctor or surgeon in-charge.
  • The patient is required to fast for a minimum of 8 hours before the surgery.

  • The surgery is conducted under general anesthesia
  • A bladder catheter is inserted which removes the urine and remains in place until the end of the surgery.
  • Two small incisions are made to insert the surgical instruments and camera.
  • The enlarged veins are then cut and sealed off. This allows the blood to reroute to the healthy veins thus effectively curing this condition.
  • The surgical equipment and camera are carefully removed and the incisions are closed.

  •  Painkillers and antibiotics are prescribed by the doctor to prevent any complications arising during recovery.
  • Ice packs are recommended if any swelling is seen in and around the region.
  • All types of strenuous activities are to be avoided for up to two weeks after the surgery.

A few complications that may arise are:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection or High fever
  • Fluid build up around the testicles which can be noticed by a heaviness in the groin.
  • Inflammation of the area around the groin
