About the Surgery

A bulge seen in the abdomen or the groin area may be hernia. It occurs when organ parts or tissues push through the skin and thus exposing a bulge. This occurs because of the malfunction of the muscular wall which is supposed to hold the organs and tissues in place.

A hernia occurs for the following reasons:

  • Formed because of lifting very heavy items.
  • It can also be caused because of constant straining during defecation or while passing urine.
  • Obesity is also a major cause
  • A sharp pain in the lower abdominal area.
  • Constant nauseousness which results in vomiting.
  • A very firm bulge seen in the abdomen area.
Much like other surgeries, the patient has to follow a set of instructions from the doctor. For a keyhole surgery, the following come under pre-surgery:
  • The patient is advised to stop particular medications a week before the surgery takes place.
  • Fasting is required for at least a minimum 6 hours before the surgery.
  • A shower should be taken by the patient before the operation to prevent an infection taking place.
Laparoscopic Surgery for Hernia is done using the 3D BARD Mesh in the inguinal cases of hernia.
  • A general anesthetic is administered to numb the area so that the patient does not feel any pain during the surgery.
  • Two small incisions are made around the hernia. One is to insert the camera so that the surgeon has visual inside the body and the other is to insert small surgical instruments.
  • The surgeon then cuts the hernia and removes it.
  • Right after, the operated area is stitched and the incisions on the skin are closed with either surgical glue or staples.
  • Painkillers are prescribed according at the judgement of the surgeon.
  • Individual is confined to bed rest for a few days and can soon return to their activity.
  • A diet comprising highly of fibre is to be taken so as to ease bowel movement and to prevent the individual from applying pressure on his abdomen again after the surgery.
  • Strenuous exercise must be avoided for at least 4 weeks
  • Most common complications are infections in and around the treated area along with a chance of the blood clotting.
  • The patient can become constipated and can suffer from even urine leakage.
