The temporomandibular joint are the two joints that link the jawbone to the skull. The major components of the temporomandibular joints include articular disc, joint capsule, articular surface of the temporal bone, mandibular condyles, lateral pterygoid muscle, and sphenomandibular ligament. With an MRI, detailed images of the joints are produced compared to other regular imaging techniques such as CT or X-ray. With these detailed images, a physician can easily diagnose and determine the presence of injuries or other conditions.
A TM MRI has many uses, including: Assess for internal joint injury. Assessing the extent of wear and tear in the joint, as in the case of meniscal tear or cartilage loss. Examining the structures around the joint for inflammation. Assessing the reason for a pain or swelling in the joint.
The procedure is completed in 15-45 minutes. You will lie on a scanning table, and the table slides into the magnetic field of the MRI machine using a remote device. Coils will be placed around your TM Joint to improve image quality. The imaging test will be done and sent to your doctor for analysis and possible treatment (if any abnormalities are detected).
