MRI is an acronym for magnetic resonance imaging. It is an imaging technique that uses radio waves and magnetic fields to create detailed pictures of the body’s interior. MRI of the lower abdomen takes images of the lower abdominal organs (torso area and stomach).
If you are experiencing symptoms such as lower abdominal pain, or a jaundice, you may require an MRI. Other symptoms that call for an MRI include a fever, unexplainable weight loss, etc. Women who experience dysmenorrhea may also have need for an MRI. Other symptoms that call for an MRI include abdominal swelling, blood in the urine, and high blood pressure. The results from an MRI will let your doctor know the underlying cause of your symptoms.
An MRI unit is used for the purpose. You will lie on a scanning table in the supine position. Using a remote device, the MRI technician will slide the table into the scanning unit and proceed to take the images. Because this doesn’t involve the use of a contrast agent, the technician will not administer any contrast agent. Instead, the MRI will be done as it is. Results from the scan are then forwarded to your doctor for analysis, interpretation and possibly, treatment.
