A magnetic resonance imaging of the hip joint allows your doctor to examine the organs, tissues, bones, and blood vessels within the hip joint or pelvic region. With the results from this MRI, your doctor can identify potential disorders that cannot be easily found by other imaging tests such as X-rays. Hip joint MRI also assists in the diagnosis of unexplainable hip pain, investigation of some cancers, and to have a better understanding of the underlying causes of your symptoms.
Because the hip region houses your reproductive organs, your doctor may ask you to undergo this test for a number of reasons, depending on your gender. A MRI of the hip joint is an important diagnostic test for both genders if you have: ? Trauma or injury in the hip region ? Birth defects ? Abnormal X-ray results ? Pain in the pelvic or lower abdominal region
An MRI unit is used for the purpose. You will lie on a scanning table in the supine position. Using a remote device, the MRI technician will slide the table into the scanning unit and proceed to take the images. In the case of MRI abdomen/pelvis with contrast, a contrast substance will be intravenously administered to you before the scan. The function of the contrast agent is to make the images from the scan clearer. Coils will be placed around your hip region to make the images clearer. Results from the scan are then forwarded to your doctor for analysis, interpretation and possibly, treatment.
