Any part of your body can be examined by an MRI procedure. MRI coccyx examines your spine’s lumbar section – the common point where back problems originate. The lumbosacral spine consists of five lumbar vertebral bones (L1 – L5), the sacrum, and the coccyx. Also present in the lumbosacral spine are nerves, large blood vessels, cartilage, ligaments, and tendons.
An MRI coccyx helps with diagnosis or treatment of spine-related problems. Pain related to injuries, disease, infection, or other conditions may be the underlying cause of your condition.
Once you are in the scanner, the technologist will speak with you through the intercom to be sure that you are not uncomfortable. The scan will be delayed until you are fully ready. The patient must remain still during the procedure. The movement will distort the images. The scanner usually makes very loud noises and clanging ones at that. This is normal. Sometimes, you may be asked to hold your breath. This is also normal. Holding your breath will depend on the images that are being taken at the time. If you do not feel comfortable during the procedure, you can communicate with the technologist through the intercom and request that he or she stops the scan.
