An MR arthrogram is a medical imaging technique that uses MRI to evaluate joints like the ankle, hip, knee, wrist, elbow, and the shoulder. It is a two-part procedure that consists of administration of a contrast substance via IV injection and an MRI of the affected joint.
With an MR arthrogram, your doctor can: Identify degeneration, disease, or tears in the tendon, ligament, or cartilage Detect synovial cysts or growths in the joint Diagnose unexplainable joint pains Determine whether or not there is need for treatment, including surgery, arthroscopy, or joint replacement.
The first part of an MRI arthrogram is the IV administration of a contrast agent. The contrast agent makes the images of the ligament and areas around the joints clearer and more detailed. After injection, an MRI scan will be performed. Results from the scan are evaluated by the doctor who will then be able to identify what’s wrong with your spine.
