What is MRI screening of the abdomen?

MRI screening of the abdomen is basically a diagnostic procedure that creates cross-sectional images of the abdomen using powerful radio waves and magnetic fields. Your doctor may ask you to undergo an abdominal MRI if earlier tests (x-ray, blood work, or CT scan) yielded abnormal results.

Why do I need an MRI screening of the abdomen?

MRI screening of the abdomen is done for a variety of reasons. You may need an abdominal MRI if your doctor thinks that there’s something wrong with your abdominal area but cannot determine that through a physical examination. Other reasons for doing an abdominal MRI include: Examining blood flow Examination of blood vessels Examination of lymph nodes Investigating the underlying cause of swelling or pain

How is an MRI of the Abdomen done?

An MRI unit is used for the purpose. You will lie on a scanning table in the supine position. Using a remote device, the MRI technician will slide the table into the scanning unit and proceed to take the images. Results from the scan are then forwarded to your doctor for analysis, interpretation and possibly, treatment.
