Testicular torsion is a rare situation, affecting about 1 in 4,000 young men. It is more common between the age group of 12 to 18 years old.

However, it may be seen at any age and even before the delivery of the child.

What are the Symptoms of Testicular Torsion?

  • Severe and sudden scrotum pain. The scrotum is the loose skin bag that is under your penis containing testicles.

  • Scrotum swelling

  • Mild to severe abdominal pain

  • Vomiting and nausea

  • Frequent need for urination

  • Fever

  • The unusual position of the testicle is positioned higher than the normal angle.

  • Young boys with testicular pain generally wake up because of scrotal pain at the midnight or early morning.

How is Testicular Torsion diagnosed?

To verify the signs and symptoms of the condition, your doctor will ask some questions.

Generally, testicular torsion is diagnosed with the physical examination of the testicles, abdomen,  groin, and scrotum.

The reflex test might be done by a slight pinch or rub inside the thigh side of the affected testicle.

Generally, this will cause testicle contraction. In case testicular torsion is present then this reflex may not happen.

To confirm the condition following medical tests are required in some cases. This include,

  • Urine test.

  • Ultrasound of scrotum

Some surgery to identify the symptoms are of testicular torsion or other similar conditions.

If you are having severe pain for several hours and the physical examination confirms testicular torsion then immediate surgery would be done.
