Pelvic organ prolapse is a normal and natural condition in which tissues and muscles might develop problems in some women following childbirth. And the condition is seen more in ageing women.

These organs might bear their weight on other organs, would interrupt their functions and in severe cases might also descend outside the vaginal canal or anus.

  • Enterocele

Prolapse of the small bowel.

  • Rectocele

Prolapse of the Rectum.


What Causes Pelvic Organ Prolapse?


  • Prolapse is caused by any activity that puts pressure on the abdomen, including- pregnancy, childbirth and labour, as one of the main causes.

  • Overweight

  • Chronic respiratory problems that would build pressure on the abdomen.

  • Cancers of the pelvic region

  • Constipation

  • Hysterectomy (removal of the uterus).

  • Genetics and weaker connective tissues in some women.


What are the symptoms of Pelvic Organ Prolapse?


  • Constant pressure and fullness in the pelvic region.

  • Lower backache.

  • Pain during intercourse

  • The discomfort of holding on to something falling from the vagina.

  • Vaginal bleeding and spotting.

  • Constipation

  • Urine or faecal incontinence.
