Gynecomastia Surgery

Overview

Gynecomastia is a frequent disorder found in men and boys that is characterized by the breasts swelling and growing excessively big. Physiologically, breast glands are present in both males and females; however, they are typically not visible in men. Even though boys are born with a small amount of breast tissue, their breasts usually don't develop in the same manner as they do in women's bodies. Men or boys of any age may develop enlarged breast glands, including babies, adolescents, and elderly adults.

What Is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a disorder brought on by estrogen and testosterone hormone imbalances. It is a condition in which there is an increase in the quantity of breast gland tissue in boys or men. It may affect one or both breasts, sometimes evenly and occasionally unevenly. The breast is made up of soft fatty tissue and solid, dense glandular tissue in an appropriate ratio.  A man with gynecomastia could have differences in the portion of glandular and fatty tissue in the breasts. Men or boys with gynecomastia may possess an excess of both tissues. Gynecomastia might make you feel uncomfortable emotionally and lower your self-esteem. Some men were unable to engage in their regular physical activities and social gatherings.  Gynecomastia surgery can be used to address all of these issues.

What Are The Causes Of Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is caused by a variety of reasons.

  • An imbalance of the sex hormones: Men and women produce both testosterone and estrogen hormones, men normally produce more testosterone than women do. During the onset of puberty the levels of hormone change, due to these hormonal changes throughout development, newborns and young boys are more likely to develop gynecomastia.
  • Obesity:  Due to extra fatty tissue, larger breasts can occasionally develop in some obese people. This condition is referred to as Pseudogynecomastia.
  • Age-related factors: Due to changes in hormone levels, older persons may also be impacted. If the condition is severe, the extra breast tissue can stretch your areola (the black skin around your nipple) and cause your breasts to droop.
  • Medications: Several medications have the potential to induce gynecomastia like anti-androgen drugs, antidepressants, antibiotics, chemotherapy, prostate cancer medicines, and ulcer or cardiovascular medicines. Also,  Certain drugs can be a vital cause of gynecomastia, such as anabolic steroids, heroin, or marijuana.

How Is Gynecomastia Treated?

  • The majority of the time, if gynecomastia is caused by puberty it usually goes away on its own within a few weeks to three years.
  • If the cause of excess breast growth is a certain medication, you may need to stop taking the medication under the guidance of your doctor.
  • If a certain disease is the root cause of gynecomastia, make sure you get the condition treated.
  • You may also choose breast reduction surgery as the solution to gynecomastia. Gynecomastia surgery can reduce breast size by removing breast tissue.

How is gynecomastia surgery performed?

How to prepare?

  • Your doctor will discuss your medical history and perform a physical examination.
  • He/she may prescribe certain diagnostic tests such as blood tests.
  • They may measure your breast tissue and also screen you for men's or boys' breast cancer.
  • You might have to stop taking certain medications such as blood thinners for a brief period before and after the procedure.
  • You will also have to avoid smoking and the use of alcohol as it can delay healing.
  • Also, make sure to arrange for help as you will need rest after the procedure.
  • Your doctor will also give you clear instructions on your diet for the day before the surgery.

What happens during the procedure?

The following are the methods to treat gynecomastia

Liposuction: The procedure follows the following steps

  • This procedure is an outpatient procedure where you can return home the same day. You will be administered with general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation.
  • Firstly, your doctor will make a small incision on each side of the chest.
  • Incisions may be made in the armpit or along part of the areola, depending on your surgeon's chosen approach.
  • Through the incision a cannula is inserted to remove extra fat and/or glandular tissue.

Tissue excision

  • Tissue excision is performed as an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation.
  • Usually, individuals who have stretched, sagging skin around the breasts can opt for this method.
  • With tissue excisions, the surgeon will be able to remove more glandular tissue when compared to liposuction.
  • Depending on how much fat or tissue removal is required, the length and position of the incision may vary, although they are often made in the natural creases of the chest or around the areola's edge.

What Happens After Surgery?

  • As it is an outpatient procedure you can go home on the same day, your doctor will guide you on how to take care of yourself and your incisions after the surgery.
  • Your doctor will advise you to wear light and loose clothing.
  • While you heal, a supporting garment will be wrapped around your chest and bandaged.
  • Your doctor will also prescribe drugs to you to reduce the pain and discomfort as you recover.
  • Make sure you have a healthy fiber-rich diet and keep yourself well-hydrated, as it will improve your overall health and help accelerate the healing process.
  • Refrain from taking a shower until your doctor instructs.  You will need to stick a sponge bath until the surgical site heals.
  • Follow all the post-operative instructions given by the doctor and make sure you take the prescribed medications as instructed. Follow up with your doctor as advised.

  • It builds up your self-confidence and self-esteem:  This condition can have a negative impact on your body image affecting your self-confidence. Insecurities can also lead to social anxiety, which makes it more difficult for an individual to connect with people.
  • Gives you a more masculine figure: Excess breast tissue in men, is often referred to as man boobs. It makes their body look more feminine. As gynecomastia surgery facilitates the removal of excess fat or tissue in the area, it gives you a masculine figure.

  • Maintain a healthy weight: Being overweight or obese can increase the risk of gynecomastia. Maintaining a healthy weight through a healthy diet and regular exercise can help prevent the condition.
  • Limit alcohol usage: Alcohol use can increase estrogen levels and contribute to gynecomastia. Limiting alcohol consumption can reduce the risk.
