Overview - Filler Rhinoplasty

Having disproportionate facial features can be distressing, leading to anxiety and social embarrassment due to an unaesthetic appearance. Many prefer to look presentable and socially acceptable, which drives them towards various cosmetic procedures to enhance their overall look. Currently, non-surgical procedures are gaining momentum in the field of cosmetology. One such common and popular non-surgical procedure is "Filler Rhinoplasty", which uses dermal fillers to temporarily change the shape of your nose. It is an effective alternative if you do not want to go under the knife.

Read on to explore filler rhinoplasty , its indications, preparation, procedure, aftercare, and the complications that may arise post-procedure.

What Is Filler Rhinoplasty Or Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty?

Non-surgical or filler rhinoplasty, popularly known as a "nose job," uses dermal fillers injected into your nose to change its shape and appearance for up to 6 months. The most commonly used dermal filler is hyaluronic acid. Cosmetic surgeons use filler rhinoplasty to make mild to moderate alterations to the nose shape, and the results last until the filler dissolves, hence repeat injections are needed to maintain the appearance of your nose. Going under the needle is less complicated and traumatic than going under the knife, but as with any procedure, filler rhinoplasty is not risk-free.

When Is It Recommended?

Filler rhinoplasty is mostly recommended for the following reasons:

  • If you want to save yourself from the trauma of surgical rhinoplasty
  • Need to smooth out nose bumps or make it look less angular
  • If you have bumps or humps on the bridge of your nose
  • The poor nasal definition, which is either broad, flat, or wide
  • Asymmetry of the nose
  • To add volume to your nose
  • To enhance the tip of your nose
  • To straighten a slightly crooked nose
  • If you need to recover quickly with minimal postoperative complications
  • To make minor alterations to the shape of your nose
  • If you are not medically fit to under surgical rhinoplasty

How To Prepare For Filler Rhinoplasty ?

Filler rhinoplasty is an outpatient (does not require hospitalization) procedure requiring minimal preparation.

  • You will likely have a consultation with your cosmetic surgeon to discuss your specific aesthetic problem (either nose bumps or disproportionate shape) and the desired result.
  • Your surgeon will take several photographs of your facial profile to study the defect that needs to be corrected.
  • You need to inform your surgeon about your medical history like diabetes (increased blood sugar levels), hypertension (high blood pressure), blood disorders, etc.
  • Keep your surgeon informed about the medications that you have been taking, like blood thinners, vitamin E supplements, or other herbal medications.
  • Take a day off from work on the day of your procedure.
  • Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothes on the day of your filler procedure.
  • Arrange for a ride back home as you cannot drive due to the effects of the local anesthesia.

What Happens During A Filler Rhinoplasty Or Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty?

Filler rhinoplasty is a non-surgical, cosmetic procedure that alters the shape of your nose. The whole procedure takes around 15 to 45 minutes, and includes the following steps:

  • Your surgeon will have you lie down with your face tilted up.
  • The targeted areas include - the bridge, tip, and sides of your nose.
  • The targeted area is cleaned with an antiseptic solution to remove any dirt or contaminants present on the surface.
  • You may have topical anesthesia (a numbing agent in the form of cream, spray, or lotion to numb the area) applied to your nose and the surrounding area so you will not feel any pain or discomfort from the needle during injecting the filler.
  • Once the effect of anesthesia sets in, your surgeon will inject the filler into the area around the nose. The most common filler is hyaluronic acid, or a botox filler may also be used.
  • You may feel a slight pinching or a pressure sensation while the filler is being injected.
  • The filler ingredient settles into the targeted areas in your deeper skin layers and holds its shape.
  • The results last up to 6 months to a maximum of 1 year, after which you may need to come back for repeat injections to maintain the appearance of your nose.
  • There is no downtime, recovery is quick, and you may resume working the next day.
  • Results are visible within a week or two after the filler rhinoplasty.

Aftercare

Post-procedure care after your filler rhinoplasty is important since it determines your desired results.

  • You may experience mild swelling, redness, bruising, and itchiness around your nose immediately after the normal procedure. DO NOT PANIC. This may resolve within a day or two with the help of pain relief medications and ice pack compressions.
  • For best results, avoid the following things for a few days:
    • Do not apply topical skincare products or make-up for 24 hours post-procedure.
    • Avoid strenuous exercise for a minimum of 48 hours, which can worsen post-procedure bruising.
    • Avoid excess sun exposure and places like hot yoga classes and saunas for at least 1 to 2 weeks.
    • Consult your surgeon if you need to avoid aspirin and blood thinning medications since they increase your bruising and delay recovery.
    • Avoid pressing or massaging your nose until instructed by your surgeon since it can alter the shape of your nose.
    • Most surgeons recommend avoiding wearing glasses for a period of 3 months post-filler rhinoplasty as the glasses' nose pads can press against the nose and hamper the healing of the nasal bones.
  • Contact your surgeon immediately if your experience:
    • Severe pain
    • Fever (beyond 104 degrees) and chills
    • If the injected area is tender, red, or hot to touch
    • If there is discoloration in areas not injected with the filler

Complications Of Filler Rhinoplasty

There are minimal complications associated with filler rhinoplasty, which include:

  • Hypersensitivity reaction causing itching, fever, and pain
  • The asymmetrical appearance of your nose
  • Surface irregularities
  • Filler migration- a condition when the injected filler ingredient migrates to other areas of your nose or sometimes even under your eyes, creating a “wavy” or “overfilled” look
  • Possible nerve injury around the injected area that may cause prolonged numbness
  • Rarely there could be complications like tissue death (necrosis), and vision loss.
